Adam, just thinking about Max’s and how he will finnish his shower. I think the easiest way would be to float out the adobe walls with wall float (agregate portland and lime) and then tile to this surface. I read somewhere and have not been able to find where I read it but in this book they recommend not to apply a portland based plaster to adobe. There reason being that the cement will trap water against the block. Do you recolect anything along these lines? If so it might be worth talking to Max about.

The blocks themselves are stabilized with portland too. So the addition of portland mud isn’t terrible since both the blocks and mud will have the same “breathing” rate. Also the surrounding adobe walls, including the backside of these walls, will have natural clay plaster; allowing for even higher breathability. That said, I’m not sure they are floating the walls and are not dropping a custom shower liner in there?
